Steve Prince brings Promised Land: An Adirondack Folk Opera to life in this image of Lyman Epps and his family traveling north to accept a tract of land near Lake Placid, NY. In the 1850’s, the Epps family were among thousands of free black Americans that tilled the rugged Adirondack landscape into farms for the purpose of fulfilling the property requirement for voting. Lyman’s ancestors would remain part of the fabric of the Lake Placid community well into the 1950s. Steve captures the hope, the difficulty and the promise of the Timbuctoo settlement in this beautiful, muscular image.
